12,000 happy ESL students

Talk Group (Shanghai) -- Created and led activities that thrilled 12,000+ ESL learners all over China

Before (Feb 2002)After (May 2006)
PROBLEM:
- Create a new style of English-learning club.
- ESL in China is a very saturated market.
- Tailor classes to the local people.
- Find venues and topics interesting to locals.
- Find class times in their busy schedules.
MY SOLUTION:
Designed a database for the various content I was creating:
- The 3 textbooks I authored
- The 1,000+ Phrase-of-the-Day text messages I wrote
- The 5 artists, 3 translators, 20 teachers, and 5 developers I managed
- Daily Mini-Adventures (2-hr class)
- Weekend Adventures (5-hr activity)
- Daily Phrase-of-the-day SMS texts
- Taught classes to improve class materials.
Traditional style of learning:
- Takes place in the same classroom.
- 1 Teacher per 30 - 50 learners.
- Teacher writes on a board.
- Teacher talks 90% of each 1-hour class.
- Teacher talks from the front of the room.
Experiential style of learning:
- Takes place at various venues related to the lesson topic.
- 3 Facilitators per 21 - 30 learners.
- Learners pair up with other learners during activities.
- Facilitators walk around to answer questions and explain concepts.
- Facilitators start activities and then mostly listen, so learners can do most of the talking during the 2-hour classes.
BeforeAfter
RESULTS:
- 12,000+ learners thrilled with their improved English.
- Disney English bought our English club in 2006.
